Consumer Appetite for Personal AI Goes Mainstream

A report by Qualcomm Technologies reveals that consumer interest in personal AI is on the rise, with about 70 percent of respondents expressing a strong desire for AI assistants capable of natural voice interaction and seamless management of devices, applications, and everyday tasks.
As consumers move beyond generic tools, they are increasingly focused on how AI technologies can enhance their daily lives. This shift coincides with the emergence of new wearable devices that leverage advanced AI models and possess built-in intelligence to understand user context, including location, preferences, and habits.
This evolution marks a significant change from passive accessories that primarily relay smartphone notifications to proactive, intelligent companions. In this new paradigm, the AI itself becomes the user interface, shifting the focus from the smartphone to the user.
The findings are part of a comprehensive study titled A Personal AI report, which surveyed over 12,000 individuals across key global markets, including the U.S., U.K., Germany, India, Brazil, and China, to explore the rise of personal AI in intelligent wearables.
Respondents showed a preference for connected ecosystems over individual devices. As users expand their array of technology, they desire seamless integration across devices, including smartphones, laptops, cars, and various wearables like smartwatches, smart glasses, and hearables. They envision an AI agent that can unify these devices and enhance their functionality.
For instance, a smartwatch might alert a user when it’s time to leave for a meeting, while the AI agent considers calendar details, real-time traffic, and battery status across devices to suggest the best route and provide meeting reminders through smart glasses, all while keeping the smartphone tucked away.
However, simply adding more devices is not enough. Users expect each new addition to offer unique benefits, such as enhanced intelligence, convenience, or contextual awareness that existing devices lack. The report emphasizes that consumers are sensitive to friction and complexity in their device ecosystems.
Usage trends indicate that wearables are becoming integral to daily life, with 60 percent of wearable owners using AI at least weekly, suggesting a shift from novelty to necessity. The report also highlights average continuous wear times for various devices:
- True wireless earbuds – 3 hours
- Wireless headphones – 3 hours
- Smart glasses – 5 hours
- Audio glasses – 6 hours
- Smartwatches – 9 hours
- Smart rings, necklaces, and pendants – 8 hours
Consumers are looking for AI that is personal and context-aware, prioritizing intuitive experiences characterized by privacy, security, and user control.
Consumer Trust Is Hard-Won
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding intelligent wearables, trust remains a critical barrier to adoption. As the use cases for these devices become more personal and persistent, issues of privacy, security, and user control are paramount. Nearly 60 percent of respondents expressed a desire to keep their wearable data private or to require approval before sharing it.
While premium features like audio quality and battery life attract consumer interest, true adoption hinges on establishing trust. Consumers demand transparency, security, and control over their data.
The report also noted that respondents showed increased interest in adopting intelligent wearables when Snapdragon was identified as the enabling platform, highlighting the importance of a trusted technology foundation.
The Industry Remains Fluid
The report indicates a strong consumer appetite for AI, with 60-70 percent of respondents interested in advanced AI features when considering new devices. However, the factors influencing purchase decisions vary by device category.
For true wireless earbuds and headphones, audio quality is the primary purchase driver, while display quality and responsiveness are crucial for smartwatches. Aesthetics, such as materials and finish, take precedence for smart rings and pendants, and control methods—voice, gesture, or touch—are key for smart glasses.
Consumer demand for Personal AI is clearly on the rise, with 70 percent of respondents indicating strong interest in AI assistants that can interact naturally and manage their devices and tasks. This trend underscores the need for manufacturers to innovate and adapt to the evolving landscape of intelligent wearables.
