US Military Trials Rapidly Deployable Counter-Drone System

The U.S. military is currently testing the Rapidly Deployable Small-Unmanned Air Defense System (RD-SUADS), a counter-drone system designed for rapid deployment. This system is part of Trust Automation’s Small-Unmanned Air Defense System family and is engineered to detect, track, identify, and neutralize small drones at military bases and deployed sites.

RD-SUADS features a compact, palletized design that allows it to fit on a standard 463L military cargo pallet. This configuration facilitates transportation via military aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III, enabling U.S. forces to quickly move counter-drone capabilities to operational locations without the need for specialized transport.

One of the system’s key attributes is its integrated diesel generator, which provides up to four days of independent operation between refueling. This capability allows RD-SUADS to function effectively in remote locations lacking conventional electrical infrastructure.

According to the U.S. Army, soldiers and airmen at Grafenwoehr Training Area are assessing how multi-service training can enhance responses to evolving unmanned aircraft system threats. The Army stated, “Train together. Adapt faster. Build readiness.” This approach aims to improve operational effectiveness against drone threats.

In addition to its mobility, RD-SUADS can be deployed at permanent military installations, where it can be integrated into a fixed-site configuration. This setup allows for enhanced base protection and 360-degree security, with a centralized server managing all system sensors and data.

Trust Automation’s SUADS has demonstrated its capabilities by detecting and engaging unmanned aerial systems (UAS) at distances ranging from two to six kilometers, with potential coverage extending up to seven kilometers under optimal conditions. The system reportedly achieved a defeat effectiveness rate of approximately 75 to 80 percent.

MAJ Patrick Smith, Battalion Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of early detection, stating, “UAS are increasingly being used to find, track and target forces on the battlefield, making early awareness critical to protecting soldiers and keeping operations moving.” He noted that the system consistently provided layered surveillance and early warning, enabling effective countermeasures against hostile UAS.

The U.S. military’s ongoing evaluation of RD-SUADS highlights its commitment to enhancing counter-drone capabilities in various operational environments.
