Apple’s best MacBook Pro decision this week had nothing to do with touch

Apple’s new touchscreen MacBook Pro brings several welcome upgrades, but one of the most notable aspects of this week’s launch is the company’s decision not to discontinue older non-touch models.

The new touchscreen MacBook Pro is set to be available starting November 6. While some users may have been eager for a touchscreen option, many others appreciate the continued availability of traditional models.

The writer mentions that although their 2023 M2 Pro 16-inch MacBook Pro is still a capable machine, its 16GB of RAM is becoming limiting. They had been considering upgrading, especially with rumors of a revamped MacBook Pro circulating.

Despite conflicting rumors about which chips the new models would feature, the writer had hoped for performance improvements alongside the new touchscreen functionality. However, it turns out that the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display has performance specifications identical to the existing non-touchscreen models.

Apple’s decision to keep the non-touchscreen M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models available is seen as a positive move. Previously, when Apple introduced the Touch Bar in 2016, the only non-Touch Bar option was the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The new MacBook Pro includes several enhancements, such as a tandem OLED display, improved thermal performance, a thinner and lighter design, slimmer bezels, a redesigned audio system, and the return of the glowing Apple logo on the lid. These upgrades come with a $400 premium, which some users may find reasonable.

For those prioritizing performance over new features, retaining the older models at a lower price point offers a compelling option. The writer reflects on their own decision-making process regarding upgrading, noting that waiting for the ideal moment to purchase can lead to missed opportunities.
