Amicro, a Zhuhai-based company, is preparing for its IPO in Hong Kong on November 12, aiming to expand its role in robotics beyond its established navigation solutions for robot vacuums. The company has provided navigation technology to eight of the top ten smart cleaning robot brands, including Xiaomi, iRobot, and Ecovacs.

Founded in 2014 as Amicro Semiconductor, the company has evolved from focusing solely on robot vacuum navigation to developing a range of technologies that enhance robot capabilities. Its early innovations included motion control and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), crucial for enabling robots to navigate complex home environments.

Finding a Market for a Chip

Jiang Xinqiao, co-founder and current chair, recognized the potential of the robot vacuum market, which offered a balance of consumer demand and technical challenges. Amicro’s first major product, the AM380S chip, was completed in December 2016, followed by the AM680 in 2018, which introduced visual navigation capabilities.

As robot vacuums have become more sophisticated, Amicro has adapted its offerings to include not just chips but also algorithms, sensor components, and software development kits. This comprehensive approach allows manufacturers to customize their products while benefiting from Amicro’s specialized technology.

Growing With the Machine

The increasing complexity of robot navigation systems has driven Amicro to innovate continuously. The integration of various sensors and advanced algorithms enables robots to better understand their environment, which is essential for effective cleaning. Amicro’s technology supports features like obstacle avoidance, efficient coverage planning, and automatic recharging.

In 2025, Amicro reported sales of over 3.5 million intelligent mobile robot solutions, showcasing its significant presence in the global market. However, the company also faced challenges, reporting revenue of approximately RMB407 million alongside a net loss of RMB155 million, indicating ongoing investment in research and development.

A Business Behind Competing Brands

Amicro’s role in the robotics industry is often behind the scenes, supplying technology that is integrated into products from various manufacturers. This flexibility allows Amicro to cater to a wide range of customer needs, from entry-level to high-end robotic cleaners. Its technology is utilized across markets in Asia, Europe, and the Americas, highlighting its global reach.

The company’s recent rebranding to Amicro Technology reflects its ambition to expand beyond household cleaning. In August 2025, it launched the AM970 multi-camera vision platform, which supports applications in diverse fields such as drones and industrial vision, marking a significant shift in its product strategy.

Looking Beyond the Floor

Amicro’s collaboration with the University of Macau aims to enhance its research in robotics and home-service applications. The upcoming IPO is expected to fund further development, with plans to allocate about 70% of net proceeds towards advancing its hardware, software, and AI capabilities.

As Amicro prepares to transition from a supplier of navigation technology for robot vacuums to a broader robotics player, its success will depend on leveraging its existing expertise while addressing the challenges posed by new environments and applications.
