RepRapMicron Uses Fibre Optics To Print Tiny Benchy in Resin

The RepRapMicron, also known as µRepRap, represents a miniature adaptation of the RepRap concept, which revolutionized larger-scale manufacturing. Its latest advancement is the PIKA UV Head, designed to leverage standard optical fiber and UV LED modules for 3D printing in UV resin.

This new technology enables the creation of small structures with a remarkable resolution of about 9 µm. The PIKA UV Head allows for in-situ printing, making it easier to produce intricate designs that were previously challenging to achieve.

To assemble the UV head, a single-mode fiber optical cable was modified from a standard patch cord. This was paired with a UV LED module rated at 3W, which effectively cures the SLA resin used in the process. The resin employed for these prints is the regular eSun Standard Resin.

Post-processing remains essential after printing, requiring the removal of excess liquid resin from both the printed part and the fiber. The cured parts then undergo further curing to ensure stability. Initial results have shown promise, although overhangs present challenges that are expected to be addressed in future iterations.

For more visual insights and examples of prints, additional photos and links to videos are available on the RepRap blog.
