OpenAI Plans Lobbying Strategy Following US Midterms

OpenAI is preparing for a significant lobbying and public relations effort in Washington after the US midterm elections. According to Axios, the company is anticipating a tougher political environment if Democrats gain control of the House.
Following two years of a supportive administration, major tech firms with connections to President Trump are facing increasing regulatory scrutiny. Competitors like Meta are already establishing connections with Democrats. OpenAI’s policy chief, Chris Lehane, aims to guide the AI discussion through 2028 with a combination of new and revised proposals. The central message emphasizes that AI does not replace human jobs.
To support this assertion, OpenAI is advocating for binding safety regulations that build on previous concepts. Lehane refers to these as “speed limits.”
The company is also addressing growing local opposition to data centers. Axios reports that OpenAI intends to rebrand these facilities as “AI Compute Campuses,” promising economic advantages for the communities that host them. Lehane states that the company’s primary goal in the upcoming Congress is to expedite safety regulations for advanced AI models.
