iPhone Duo Reviewed: A Mixed Bag in the Foldable Landscape

Brady Snyder from Android Authority has tested every foldable smartphone released in the US this year, including four from Motorola, three from Samsung, and one from Google. His experience with foldable Android phones began five years ago with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and he has since transitioned to using the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 as his daily device.

After spending nearly five days with the iPhone Duo, Snyder finds its wide form factor enjoyable, similar to his experience with other foldables. However, he notes that for seasoned Android users, the iPhone Duo presents a mix of innovative ideas and inconsistent execution.

The iPhone Duo’s Display Features

The iPhone Duo features a nano-texture top layer on its folding display, which Apple describes as a matte finish. This finish includes laser-etched microlenses above each pixel, aimed at reducing glare. While Snyder appreciates the matte display for its light diffusion properties, he acknowledges that it can make the screen appear dimmer and less vibrant compared to glossy displays.

Despite initial concerns, Snyder reports no issues with color or brightness performance, even in direct sunlight. However, he does notice a grainy texture on the iPhone Duo’s screen, making it less sharp than the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s glossy display.

The iPhone Duo’s folding display assembly is noted for its polished design, with a minimal raised bezel and a hinge mechanism that does not protrude beyond the display. This design allows for a smoother experience when using the device as a tablet. Although the iPhone Duo does have a crease, Snyder finds it comparable to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Audio and Camera Performance

As a content consumption device, the iPhone Duo has advantages, including MagSafe compatibility for easy stand use and superior stereo speakers compared to other foldables. While the crease becomes less noticeable over time, Snyder points out that the under-display camera (UDC) presents challenges, with quality loss affecting both the camera and display.

The UDC area on the iPhone Duo is larger than typical, leading to noticeable pixelation and lower resolution. Snyder believes this might not deter all users but highlights a design flaw compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Apple Pencil Support

Another standout feature of the iPhone Duo is its support for the Apple Pencil. Snyder has found the experience of using the Apple Pencil USB-C with the iPhone Duo to be exceptional, particularly for note-taking and content creation. However, he notes that the stylus does not attach securely to the device, which could be a concern for users.

While some may wish for a stylus designed specifically for the iPhone Duo, Snyder finds the existing Apple Pencil to be effective and well-suited for the device’s nano-texture display.

Software and App Support Challenges

Despite its strengths, Snyder criticizes the iPhone Duo’s software experience, describing it as frustrating and lacking optimization for many apps. Apple’s decision to create a new iOS SDK for the iPhone Duo has resulted in a slow rollout of updates, leaving many apps unoptimized at launch.

He notes that while the iPhone Duo can run two apps in a 50:50 split, it lacks the multitasking capabilities found in Android devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which can handle up to eight apps simultaneously.

Comparing the iPhone Duo to Other Foldables

With the entry of Apple into the foldable market, consumers now have more choices, including the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Motorola Razr Fold, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Snyder believes that the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 cater to different user preferences, with the former being more suited for those who prioritize stylus support and content consumption.

While Snyder prefers the Galaxy Z Fold 8 for its lighter weight and better software, he acknowledges that the iPhone Duo offers a compelling alternative, particularly for users invested in the Apple ecosystem.
