OpenAI to Acquire Pierre Computer Company, Enhancing Codex Tools
OpenAI has announced its intention to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., known for its Code Storage and a suite of open-source developer tools. Users of the Codex app have already benefited from Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries, which enhance file browsing and code review processes.
The collaboration aims to refine Git workflows, adapting them for coding agents. OpenAI has recognized the need for evolving systems around Git as engineering work increasingly occurs in parallel. Recently, the company introduced Pando, its in-house source control backend, to improve Git scalability.
OpenAI plans to set a new standard for software development, from the initial branch creation by an agent to the deployment of code. The goal is to position Codex as the primary platform for developers and agents tackling ambitious projects.
Enhancing Code Review and Navigation
Pierre’s commitment to quality is evident in its tools for code review. The Trees library allows developers to navigate project files efficiently, while Diffs simplifies the process of identifying changes. These tools are designed for high performance, even when handling large volumes of code.
Additionally, Pierre’s Diffs includes an Edit mode, enabling reviewers to correct code directly where issues arise. The recent release of Highlights, a fast syntax highlighter, further enhances the coding experience by updating in real-time as developers type.
Integration with Codex
Pierre has developed tools that are well-received by developers, and the acquisition aims to create new products and platforms that benefit the entire industry. After the acquisition is finalized, OpenAI intends to advance the future of source control, connecting code deployment with decision-making processes at scale.
Pierre’s open-source projects will remain accessible, and users can continue utilizing Code Storage post-acquisition while OpenAI integrates its features into Codex.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until the acquisition is completed, OpenAI and Pierre will operate as separate entities.
