Microsoft Addresses 1,415 Vulnerabilities in October Security Update

Microsoft’s latest monthly security update addresses 1,415 vulnerabilities across multiple products. One vulnerability affecting Windows Shell has been exploited in the wild, while 85 are classified as critical. Affected products include Windows OS, Office, Exchange, .NET, Edge, as well as potentially Hyper-V and Azure components.

The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-96951, allows unauthorized attackers to bypass a security feature over a network by injecting special elements into Windows Shell. Microsoft notes that a potential attack vector could involve an email or instant message containing a maliciously crafted file designed to exploit this vulnerability. However, Microsoft emphasizes that an attacker cannot force a user to view attacker-controlled content and must instead convince the user to take action.

Security experts have raised concerns about the high volume of vulnerabilities, suggesting that many may be “wormable” or pre-auth RCEs that will require immediate prioritization. They recommend prioritizing all CVEs with a severity higher than 9.0 and planning remediation accordingly, including against potential regressions.
