Airbnb to Launch AI Travel Agent in Early 2027

Airbnb has announced plans to launch its AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. This announcement was made during the company’s Q3 shareholder letter, where it provided details on the agent’s functionality and how it differs from traditional AI chatbots.

CEO Brian Chesky previously outlined the company’s vision for an AI agent that offers a more engaging interface than standard chatbots. He emphasized that the planning process is an enjoyable part of travel, and the AI should enhance, rather than detract from, the experience of discovering new destinations.

Chesky reiterated this perspective during the earnings call, stating that current AI agents excel at simple tasks but fall short in the complex realm of trip planning. He noted that 80% of travelers enjoy researching their trips, wanting to compare options and share experiences with fellow travelers.

Airbnb’s AI agent will feature a personalized interface tailored specifically for travel. Instead of merely responding to inquiries like a chatbot, it will create an interactive experience based on user questions. Chesky described this as a custom-designed AI-native experience that utilizes a variety of travel-specific components, such as maps and itineraries, to provide real-time responses.

The agent is expected to function similarly to generative user interfaces, adapting to the user’s travel needs at any given moment. Airbnb believes its nearly two decades of experience in connecting hosts and guests will inform the development of the agent.

Beyond booking assistance, the AI agent will support travelers throughout their trips, helping with tasks like changing reservations, resolving payment issues, and providing safety support. This capability is something that external agents typically cannot offer.

Looking ahead, Airbnb anticipates that the AI agent will also assist with additional aspects of travel, including services and experiences, which have gained importance following the company’s redesign last year.

While the company had previously indicated a launch timeframe within the next year, it is now committing to releasing the AI agent in early 2027.

This announcement coincided with strong third-quarter earnings, where Airbnb reported a 19% revenue increase to $4.87 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations. The company has also raised its revenue growth forecast for 2026 to the high teens.

Chesky remarked on the earnings call that Airbnb is experiencing a growth resurgence, highlighting that Q3 marked the fastest revenue growth for the company in over three years.
