Apple TV 4K: Expected Longevity and Support

The new Apple TV 4K, priced at $299, is set to launch on November 13, featuring an A19 chip and an improved Siri Remote with hands-free controls. However, potential buyers may wonder how long they can expect the device to be supported with updates.
Apple does not specify the duration of updates for tvOS or the support lifespan for its streaming devices. Historically, older Apple TVs have received significant software updates for eight to ten years, with security patches continuing even longer. Users may find that hardware remains functional beyond official support, but software and app compatibility issues often prompt upgrades.
Apple TV Support History
The Apple TV HD, introduced in 2015, and the first-generation Apple TV 4K, launched in 2017, both received updates to tvOS 26 in 2025, marking nearly a decade of major software support. Security patches continued until July 2026 with tvOS 26.6. However, this support ended in September 2026 with the release of tvOS 27, which does not include the 2015 and 2017 models on its compatibility list.
As of now, Apple has not confirmed whether these older models will receive further security updates. Therefore, it remains uncertain if the new Apple TV 4K will enjoy a similar decade of support. Unlike Apple, Amazon commits to at least four years of security updates for its Fire TV devices, providing customers with a clearer support timeline.
When to Replace Your Apple TV
Not being able to update to the latest tvOS version does not render an Apple TV obsolete. For instance, Netflix continues to support the Apple TV HD and first-generation Apple TV 4K, despite their ineligibility for tvOS 27. However, as developers update their software requirements, older devices may struggle to run certain apps.
Performance is a more relevant factor than age when considering an upgrade. Signs that it may be time to replace your Apple TV include slow menu navigation, frequent app crashes, or the discontinuation of support for a service you use. Security is also a concern, particularly if the device serves as a smart home hub and no longer receives patches.
The cost of upgrading can be significant, especially with the new model priced at $299. Notably, Apple’s Siri AI beta will also be available on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer, allowing users to access Siri without needing to purchase the latest model. The 2026 Apple TV 4K introduces enhancements over the 2022 version, including a faster A19 processor and built-in microphones for hands-free control.
If the Siri Remote is lost or damaged, users can utilize their iPhone as a remote instead of replacing the entire setup. The latest Siri Remote is compatible with all Apple TV 4K models and the 2015 Apple TV HD, with replacement costs set at $59.
