BAE Systems Enhances Quadcopter Interceptors with Multi-Shot Laser-Guided Missiles

BAE Systems has enhanced the counter-drone capabilities of the Malloy T-150 UAV by equipping it with laser-guided precision missiles. This upgrade allows the quadcopter to effectively neutralize multiple drone threats, as demonstrated during a recent test at a US Air Force base.
The TRV-150, a modified version of the Malloy T-150, was outfitted with a production-ready three-pod launcher loaded with Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) missiles. This system transforms standard 70-mm rockets into laser-guided precision missiles, significantly increasing the firepower of the UAV.
Originally designed for heavy-lift tactical missions for the Royal Navy and US Marines, the TRV-150 has been repurposed for drone interception. During the tests conducted by the US Office of the Under Secretary for Research & Engineering at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, the interceptor successfully engaged and neutralized several targets without needing to land or reload.
This development indicates the potential for creating interceptor swarms that can be produced quickly and in large numbers, providing sufficient firepower to counter large-scale drone threats. The use of existing technology and components allows for faster development of these interceptors, which can also serve dual purposes during quieter periods for resupply and reconnaissance missions.
Thomas Lancashire, Head of UAS Business Development at BAE Systems’ FalconWorks, stated, “Our customers are facing drone threats right now, so we’ve worked at pace with our partners to move from concept to a proven system, which can engage multiple targets in a single mission.” He emphasized the importance of delivering effective military capabilities quickly in today’s rapidly evolving environment.
