TornadoVM 7.3 Enhances GPU Acceleration for Java Applications

TornadoVM, an open-source heterogeneous programming framework for Java, has reached version 7.3, marking a significant milestone for the project. This framework automatically accelerates Java programs on multi-core CPUs and GPUs, providing a rich GPU programming ecosystem that works with any mainstream JDK distribution, including OpenJDK, GraalVM, Temurin, and Zulu.
Rather than replacing existing Java Virtual Machines (JVMs), TornadoVM operates alongside them, offloading Java code to hardware backends and managing memory between the Java heap and accelerators. This functionality is particularly beneficial for modern cloud and machine learning workloads.
During development, TornadoVM compiles Java source code to OpenCL and Apple Metal backends, allowing developers to work locally on their laptops and deploy to servers equipped with Nvidia GPUs for enhanced performance. This approach embodies a “Write Once, Run Anywhere” philosophy for modern machine learning workloads.
