Spotify Removes Over 50 Million AI-Generated Tracks from Recommendations

Spotify has announced the removal of over 50 million songs classified as AI-generated spam from its user recommendations over the past year. This decision was revealed in a statement made on October 20, 2026, which also highlighted changes to its recommendation system aimed at promoting music created by human artists.

According to Spotify, its editorial team maintains a standard that excludes content identified as slop or spam. The company noted, “Since we made these changes, we’ve seen a marked decrease in listener concerns about this content showing up in recommendations.” This indicates a proactive approach to enhancing user experience on the platform.

While Spotify has not mandated labels for all AI-generated tracks, it has introduced an “AI Persona” badge for artists who use an AI identity that does not represent a real person. Music from these AI personas will not be recommended to users. In contrast, other streaming services have adopted stricter measures regarding AI music, such as YouTube Music, which now labels AI-generated songs, and Deezer, which allows users to filter out AI content. Bandcamp has gone further by banning AI music entirely.

Spotify employs a combination of listener engagement metrics, upload patterns, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools to identify tracks that may be considered AI-generated spam. Last year, the company reported taking down over 75 million songs identified as spam. Additionally, Spotify is collaborating with Universal Music Group and the independent music publisher Believe to create a tool for producing AI music remixes.
