Opel has unveiled the STX Concept at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, presenting a modern interpretation of the traditional station wagon tailored for the electric vehicle era. This new design emphasizes aerodynamic efficiency, positioning the STX as a potential competitor to the popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) market.

The STX, which stands for Sports Tourer eXperimental, reflects Opel’s commitment to evolving its design philosophy while honoring its heritage. The concept was introduced by Opel Chief Executive Florian Huettl, who described it as a deliberate evolution from previous models like the Opel GT X Experimental.

Unlike the taller styling of modern crossovers, the STX Concept draws inspiration from classic European station wagons, such as the 1953 Olympia Rekord Caravan, which was the first German factory-built station wagon. This lineage is evident in the STX’s sleek design, which aims to provide a more efficient alternative to the bulky SUVs dominating the market.

The STX features a distinctive front fascia with an evolved version of the signature Opel Vizor, now presented as a sweeping high-tech glass panel. The design includes slanted vertical light animations that frame an illuminated lightning bolt emblem, giving the vehicle a contemporary look.

Opel has focused on aerodynamics in the STX’s design, equipping it with intelligent active aerodynamics. At highway speeds, the vehicle’s active side bumpers adjust, and two rear diffuser fins extend automatically to reduce low-pressure turbulence, enhancing stability and efficiency.

The STX Concept also boasts a long, low body and roofline, which contribute to its aerodynamic advantage over taller vehicles. This design allows for a more streamlined profile, which is crucial for electric vehicles that require efficient energy use.

While no specific technical details were disclosed, the STX Concept showcases Opel’s vision for the future of family vehicles, merging traditional station wagon attributes with modern electric vehicle technology. The introduction of the STX at the Paris Motor Show highlights Opel’s strategy to re-establish the station wagon as a viable option in the evolving automotive landscape.
