Apple Introduces Enhanced iPad Mini with OLED Display and A20 Pro Chip

Apple has significantly upgraded the iPad mini, introducing OLED technology, a faster processor, and improved durability. The redesigned tablet measures just 5.4 millimeters thick while accommodating a larger screen within the same footprint as its predecessor.
The new iPad mini is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which enhances graphics performance and on-device AI processing. Preorders will begin on October 28, with availability starting November 6. Pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
OLED Display Enhancements
One of the most notable changes is the introduction of an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display. Apple has reduced the bezels by 24%, increasing screen space without enlarging the tablet. The OLED technology allows for better pixel control, resulting in deeper blacks and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.
The display achieves a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, more than double that of the previous generation. It can reach 600 nits for full-screen brightness in both SDR and HDR content, while dimming to just one nit for comfortable reading in low-light conditions.
Additionally, an optional nano-texture finish is available to minimize glare in bright settings, making the device more suitable for photographers and designers who work outdoors. The display also supports the P3 wide color gamut for improved color accuracy.
Performance Upgrades with A20 Pro Chip
The A20 Pro chip is built using a 2-nanometer process and features a design inspired by Apple’s M-series processors. Its seven-core GPU includes Neural Accelerators in each core, enhancing the tablet’s capabilities for demanding AI tasks.
Apple claims that the new iPad mini offers up to 4.5 times the AI performance of its predecessor, with graphics performance reaching 2.7 times that of the previous model. Multithreaded CPU performance is also improved by up to 60%.
The GPU supports dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and ray tracing, which are beneficial for graphically intensive games and applications that manage complex 3D environments.
Improved Durability and Features
The new iPad mini retains its compact size while gaining an IP67 rating, providing protection against dust and water exposure under specific conditions. However, it is not fully waterproof.
A 12-megapixel Center Stage camera has been repositioned to the landscape edge, making video calls more natural in horizontal orientation. Apple has also introduced an Acoustic Display to enhance audio quality, along with faster wireless and cellular connectivity.
The device runs on iPadOS 27, which includes Apple’s next-generation Intelligence features and improved Siri capabilities. These advancements allow the system to draw on personal context, answer questions, and interpret information displayed on the screen.
The hardware upgrades enhance the iPad mini’s screen space and processing power while maintaining its compact form factor. Independent testing will determine how these improvements affect everyday performance and battery life.
