OpenAI Launches Dots, Its New AI Personal Assistant

OpenAI has launched Dots, an always-on AI personal assistant that operates in the background to help users manage their tasks more efficiently. This new offering was unveiled during the company’s developer day in late September 2026. Alexander Embiricos, who leads OpenAI’s enterprise product team, discussed the development of Dots at TechCrunch Disrupt, emphasizing the trend of companies adopting friendly mascots as avatars for their AI technologies.

Embiricos noted a “convergent evolution” among AI assistants, stating that framing the product as a single conversational entity rather than multiple interactions makes it more intuitive for users. Dots is available to subscribers of the ChatGPT desktop and mobile apps at the Pro tier or higher, with plans starting at $100 per month. Once connected to users’ calendars, emails, and other tools, Dots aims to streamline their workflow.

While much of Dots’ functionality can be replicated using OpenAI’s Codex app, Embiricos highlighted that Dots is designed to be more user-friendly and requires less manual input. He shared a personal anecdote about his wife leaving her computer on overnight so that her AI could continue working, illustrating the convenience Dots aims to provide.

Transforming AI Interaction

The evolution of Dots involved repackaging existing AI capabilities into a more accessible format. This transition began with the development of ChatGPT Work, which emerged from coding tools designed for software engineers. The name “Dots” is a nod to the negative space within OpenAI’s logo, intended to evoke a sense of ubiquity.

The persistent nature of Dots means it can operate without user prompts, leading to increased token usage for OpenAI and a more proactive assistant for users. Embiricos described how Dots can anticipate user needs, citing an instance where it flagged a calendar conflict just minutes before an event, indicating that improvements in timing are expected as the product matures.

Data Privacy Concerns

As with many AI applications, there is a balance between the personal information required for effective assistance and the privacy concerns of users. Dots incorporates a feature called proactive research, which allows it to analyze user data and suggest ways to enhance its helpfulness. However, this raises questions about data collection practices similar to those criticized in other AI applications.

OpenAI assures users that Dots maintains the same privacy controls as ChatGPT, allowing users to disable model training and manage what resources the assistant can access. Despite these controls, some users have expressed concerns about the app’s insistence on accessing certain data, such as refusing to accept read-only access to cloud drives.

Future of AI Personal Assistants

Another significant question surrounding AI agents like Dots is their scalability. While they may be enjoyable for individual users, businesses may be less enthusiastic about integrating such technology. Embiricos, who prefers human interaction over AI agents, acknowledged this challenge, stating that corporate partners often prefer to engage with people rather than AI.

OpenAI is exploring collaborations with payment processors to enable Dots to handle financial transactions, which could represent a significant advancement for AI assistants. However, Embiricos noted that while giving an assistant access to email is a considerable step, allowing access to bank accounts remains a sensitive issue for many users.
