Hindsight Secures Up to $1M Funding for AI Content Moderation as Google Retires Perspective API

Starting January 1, 2027, any moderation pipeline using the Perspective API will fail as Google’s Jigsaw unit shuts down the service on December 31, 2026. This closure ends one of the most widely used tools for assessing online comment toxicity, leaving platforms, publishers, and communities with the urgent task of finding a replacement.
Hindsight aims to fill this gap by offering a novel approach to AI content moderation. Instead of a standard vendor swap, Hindsight provides a professional guarantee against harm caused by content that its model fails to catch.
“Coded Language is the new slur, but it’s ridiculously hard to catch consistently,” said Dean Gebert, Hindsight’s Founder. “And a like-for-like model or tool swap just moves Perspective’s blind spots to a different vendor.”
Forced Migration Doubles as an Enterprise Audit
While many companies may view the shutdown of Perspective as a routine engineering issue, Hindsight sees it as an opportunity to reassess the effectiveness of the previous tool. Perspective evaluated how toxic a comment “sounds” on the surface, which works well for obvious insults but poorly for language designed to appear harmless.
Bad actors have adapted by using Coded Language, which includes numeric codes like “1488,” extremist slang such as “boogaloo,” and misspellings that mimic slurs phonetically. This issue is not limited to English, as Coded Language can be found in various languages. Hindsight’s model is pre-trained on 110 languages, allowing it to identify Coded Language across multiple contexts without needing separate models for each language.
The stakes are significant. From 2016 to mid-2022, the Anti-Defamation League reported that extremists raised at least $6.2 million through 324 crowdfunding campaigns. Additionally, over 30 federal cases against a major gaming platform allege that its safeguards failed to protect young users. Merchandise with white nationalist messaging continues to appear on major online marketplaces, highlighting the failures of existing moderation systems.
Why Binary Models Are Forced into a Compromise
Many moderation tools rely on binary logic—Safe or Unsafe—creating a challenging trade-off for platform executives. A strict system generates false alarms for everyday slang, while a lenient one risks missing harmful content.
Hindsight’s model introduces three categories: Red Flag, Yellow Flag, and Safe, allowing for a more nuanced approach to context-dependent language. Automation handles straightforward cases, enabling human reviewers to focus on more complex situations, which can then inform further fine-tuning of the model.
“Consistently sorting contextual text into an accurate Yellow Flag category was extremely painful,” Gebert said. “It took equal doses of obsession, stubbornness, and lattes. But it’ll let clients rely less on human oversight and get more accurate results, so it’ll pay off.”
What the Benchmarks Show
Hindsight benchmarked nine AI content moderation models, including those from Mistral, OpenAI, Meta, Azure, and AWS, against a fixed set of 2,205 real online posts. A human labeled each post as Red Flag, Yellow Flag, or Safe, and Hindsight’s model variants had not seen these posts during development.
On detecting Coded Language, Hindsight achieved a success rate of 97.9%, while other models scored 65% or lower. Its Missed Flag rate was 3.3%, and its False Alarm rate was 8.2%. The company has published its benchmark methodology and results on its website, allowing companies to test Hindsight with their data.
The Efficiency of Specialization: Sniper vs. Shotgun
Hindsight challenges the assumption that larger models always perform better. Instead of relying on one large, general-purpose model, it utilizes three specialized base models, each with fewer than 600 million parameters, claiming to outperform models up to 14 times larger. Gebert describes the approach as more sniper, less shotgun.
The training data is intentionally narrow, consisting of 83 MB of real online posts from 18 datasets, including 292,000 posts labeled by human reviewers. Hindsight tracked the performance of 164 trained variants and promoted the best-performing variant to Champion.
What a $1M Guarantee Changes
Enterprise AI content moderation is typically viewed as a cost center that reduces risk, but few vendors offer guarantees. Hindsight changes this by providing up to $1 million in financial support if its model labels a post as Safe and that post leads to a documented liability event.
For teams facing the deadline, the transition to Hindsight is straightforward, requiring only a single API call to replace Perspective. Hindsight is designed to catch Coded Language that similar tools may miss.
Gebert suggests running Hindsight and Perspective side by side for a week to analyze discrepancies, which can reveal where toxicity scores may have fallen short. Hindsight is limiting its launch cohort to four commercial clients to allow for custom calibration of model instances against each platform’s unique community policies and risk profiles. Founder pricing will be available for this initial group.
