Stripe Reports Growth in AI Agent Transactions, But Details Remain Sparse

AI agents are increasingly using Stripe’s payment service Link to shop for their users, according to Upstarts Media. In September, the number of transactions grew 38-fold, while payment volume increased 20-fold. However, Stripe has not revealed the exact number of purchases or the total amount involved in these transactions.
Despite the impressive growth, the figures stem from a small initial base, which limits their significance regarding the overall scale of AI agent transactions. Stripe executive Dan Hill noted that the volume is now becoming substantial.
When Stripe conducted its analysis, about 70 agents were utilizing the service. This number has since expanded to around 200, including notable agents like Meta’s Muse and Grok Bot. Hill mentioned that most agents typically spend about $100 per transaction, although some users have directed them to book flights or purchase furniture worth thousands of dollars.
Retail transactions accounted for 36 percent of the total, while travel represented 28 percent of the payment volume.
Stripe’s Link service does not provide agents with the user’s actual credit card number. Instead, it generates a separate 16-digit number, allowing users to set spending limits. While Anthropic and OpenAI also use Link, they have not yet implemented it for agent purchases. Hill acknowledged that Stripe is not the only player in this space, citing PayPal and Shopify’s Shop Pay as competitors. He emphasized that the market for AI agent transactions is still in its infancy.
