Reverse Engineer Anything Project Brings AI Agents to Binary Analysis

17 October 2026 2 min read هدهد تك | Hudhud Tech

Reverse Engineer Anything (REA) is an open-source initiative that has garnered over 200,000 stars on GitHub. This project integrates AI coding agents, including Claude Code and Codex, with reverse-engineering tools such as Ghidra, Hopper, and IDA. It enables developers to analyze compiled binaries, trace function calls, and explore how applications implement various features.

REA utilizes MCP servers to connect reverse-engineering tools to AI agents, allowing them to query disassemblers, inspect functions and cross-references, and trace program behavior. The project supports static analysis of JavaScript and Electron applications, as well as .NET assemblies, using the findings to inform further investigations. Notably, REA operates locally and does not aim to recover the original source code.

Showcases and Applications

The showcases available on GitHub illustrate the capabilities of REA. For instance, it can trace the implementation of Notion’s Electron clipboard, reconstruct a sound-panning function from the classic game DX-Ball, and recover bullet-ring angle calculations from the 16-bit code of the DOS game Touhou 4.

Community Reactions

On platforms like Hacker News, some users question the added value of REA compared to simply using Ghidra, an open-source tool developed by the NSA for analyzing compiled programs. However, others report improved outcomes when utilizing an AI agent with reverse-engineering tools. One user expressed concerns that this technology could accelerate the trend of moving applications to the cloud, potentially limiting reverse engineering opportunities.

REA is not confined to Ghidra; it also supports Hopper, a native macOS disassembler, and IDA, a disassembler and debugger for analyzing executable code across various processor architectures and platforms. Additionally, JavaScript and .NET inspections can be conducted without requiring a native analysis engine.

Concerns and Future Implications

Some independent developers have expressed apprehension that AI-assisted reverse engineering might facilitate the unauthorized copying of their games and applications, bypassing paid features and commercially exploiting their work without consent. Conversely, discussions among developers on platforms like Reddit focus on the potential of reverse engineering for creating innovative projects.

As the REA project continues to evolve, it raises important questions about the ethical implications of AI in reverse engineering and the balance between innovation and intellectual property protection.
